Accessibility
Learning should be reachable in more than one way.
BrightSteps-X is being developed for keyboard, touch, mouse, and common assistive-technology use. Accessibility is treated as ongoing product work rather than a one-time certification.
Features included in this release
- A skip-to-main-content link, semantic landmarks, page headings, form labels, and status announcements.
- Visible keyboard focus, logical tab order, large touch targets, and navigation that remains available on phone-sized screens.
- Responsive layouts for phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop widths without intentional horizontal page scrolling.
- Reduced-motion support when the device requests it.
- Text remains available when optional audio is unavailable, and neural voice can be disabled for a child.
- Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology; meaningful images and controls receive text alternatives or labels.
Testing baseline retained from v7.2.7 and regression-checked for v7.3.9
Public, authentication, child, parent, and administrator routes receive automated functional and structural checks. The v7.3.9 regression suite also covers the reader home control, persistent custom-story shelf visibility, Listening Mode, custom-story consent controls, private hero-photo responses, custom-story deletion, responsive public assets, and keyboard-safe navigation foundations. Representative phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop checks remain part of the documented accessibility baseline; automated checks do not replace testing with assistive-technology users.
Known limits
Some visual mathematics and illustrated story experiences are inherently visual and may not yet provide an equivalent experience for every learner. Live microphone behaviour depends on browser and operating-system permissions. Automated checks also cannot prove full conformance or replace testing with people who use assistive technology.
